What to Expect With Our Visit
After your first telehealth consult, I will travel to wherever you feel most comfortable, whether that is your home or apartment, a friends home, or even an outdoor location. You will have your vitals taken and I will listen to your heart and lungs. I will describe what to expect with the treatment, then give you an intramuscular injection of half-dose (0.5mg/kg) ketamine. If tolerated well, that will be followed by another half-dose (for a total of 1mg/kg) about 15 minutes later. You will have your blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse-oximetry monitored through your experience. I’ll guide you through the experience, which can be quite intense, while watching your breathing and making sure that you don’t try to get up or do anything to injure yourself.
You will be observed for approximately 1.5-2 hours until the effects of the ketamine have worn off. Usually people feel quite drained and “hung over” afterwards. This is why being at home is so nice. You can remain in your bed, or on your couch for as long as needed while you recover.
You are welcome to have a friend or loved one sit with you during the session.
You will be given the physician’s personal cell phone in case there is any emergent needs after your visit.
While IM ketamine is quite safe, there can be some unforeseen side effects or bad reactions. Most people fall into the category of “minimal sedation,” still able to easily respond to verbal commands, but there is a small risk that you could become slightly more sedated. With a physician at your side, I can treat any possible over sedation, decreased breathing, high blood pressure, nausea/vomiting, elevated heart rate, seizure, allergic reaction, or behavioral emergencies to name a few.
